Calvin Harris, a Scottish superproducer and DJ, has recently confirmed a VR Concert that will take place on TikTok LIVE later this month. The producer and DJ’s first-ever VR concert is planned for Friday, January 13, and will be available to watch for free in 2D through his official TikTok account, while fans in Europe and Asia can stream it in 3D through PICO virtual reality headsets.
In a digitally animated performance intended to transport viewers musically through Calvin’s virtual world, Harris will appear as a virtual avatar. In the promotional video, Harris can be seen DJing while submerged at the bottom of a fictitious ocean with whales, dolphins, and bioluminescent jellyfish all around. We’ll have to wait to see if he successfully waterproofed his virtual equipment.
The concert is described as a metaverse party filled with audio-reactive visuals in a nature-inspired luminous world’ in the event description. Through virtual reality headsets, attendees can party with other attendees, explore Calvin’s world as avatars, and stand just a few feet away from him as he performs.
Immersive virtual reality concerts took off after the global pandemic and briefly appeared to be the future of the music biz. However, the phenomenon’s momentum appears to have stalled significantly since we all went back to IRL shows. Harris’ support might alter that, or it might not.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol 2, Harris’ sixth studio album, was released last year and featured contributions from Pusha T, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Justin Timberlake, 21 Savage, and Pharrell.
