The leading global furniture retailer, IKEA, is launching a new AI-driven mixed reality interactive design experience to help customers design and visualize their living spaces. IKEA Kreativ is housed within the company’s website and iOS application for customers in the US. It will debut on Android and be available for additional markets in the coming months.

As per the company, it is the first fully-featured mixed reality design experience across the home retail industry. It bridges the gap between eCommerce and in-store customer journeys by facilitating lifelike and accurate interior design.

Nevertheless, this is not the first mixed reality home design platform. IKEA has its own IKEA Place app and other retailers, such as Amazon, Wayfair, Target, The Home Depot, Overstock, Houzz, and more, have integrated AR features within their platforms. However, these platforms are designed to showcase how furniture will appear in a room when looking through your phone camera.

IKEA Kreativ captures a wide-angle 3D projection and enables the customers to design the entire space from scratch. It uses spatial computing, machine learning, and 3D mixed reality technologies developed by Silicon Valley AI specialists Geomagical Labs. The feature uses similar AI and computer vision technologies that power self-driving cars, such as AI neural networks to recognize the objects and geometry of indoor spaces, stereo vision algorithms to view in 3D, and computational photography algorithms and mixed reality 3D graphics.

Customers can design their own spaces or pick from over fifty fully furnished, semi-furnished, or empty 3D showrooms. IKEA Kreativ also enables the customer to erase the existing furniture from an image to help them start from scratch within their own space.

Once the existing furniture is gone, users can fill the space with real-world scale furniture from the complete IKEA catalog. Any product selected from thereon can be added to the shopping cart or saved to an IKEA account for later. Users can also share their designs with their family and friends or even with an interior designer at IKEA.

“We’re working hard to help people imagine a better life at home by fusing real technology advancements with fun and magical user experiences,” said Brian Totty, CEO and founder of Geomagical Labs.
