The Oculus Quest 2’s system software has a dormant pass-through keyboard feature which could make using a keyboard much more accessible while wearing a virtual reality headset.
YouTuber Basti564 first spotted the pass-through keyboard feature. The feature allows the user to specify an area of real-world space where the keyboard and hand motions can be noticeable. In addition, it integrates a rectangular camera view into the VR play sessions, enabling the user to type using the keyboard without taking off the Oculus Quest 2 headset.
Without this feature, there is only one keyboard that can be displayed in virtual reality – the Logitech K830, which pairs with the Quest 2 to produce a 3D model of the keyboard.
Based on a test by UploadVR, the pass-through feature crashed the Oculus Quest 2’s Guardian functionality, which is basically the safety feature of Oculus.
The pass-through keyboard feature is undoubtedly a great feature that will work wonders for accessibility, but Oculus has to iron out the defects before all can readily use it.
