UAE is gearing up to unveil the first-ever hospital in the metaverse built under the management of the pioneering healthcare provider, Thumbay Group.

The initiative, scheduled for launch in October, will be a fully functional virtual hospital where patients can visit and interact with healthcare personnel using their avatars. The offering will particularly be beneficial for medical tourists who can virtually check out the hospital and the facilities before traveling down to the Thumbay healthcare facility.

“This will be a complete virtual hospital where people will come with an avatar and consult with the doctor. To cater to medical tourism, we will allow patients to see what the hospital looks like in the metaverse if they travel and come to Thumbay healthcare facility,” said Dr. Thumbay Moideen, founder and President of Thumbay Group.

Thumbay Group has developed augmented reality and virtual reality metaverse technologies to support long-term care patients who have been at the hospital for at least six months, are bedridden, or are paralyzed. The virtual hospital will expand the scope of these technologies to support people in several other ways.

The hospital is already providing its patients with AR and VR headsets to help them have a feeling of home while they are confined to their rooms. For instance, a Sri Lankan patient who has been at the hospital for a while after losing his sensory motions due to a car accident can virtually travel to his home using AR/VR tech. It’s a huge support for long-term care patients, giving them hope to get well soon and travel back to their homes.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Community Protection (MOHAP) unveiled the world’s first customer service center built with metaverse tech last January. It has been created to meet customers’ requirements in 3D spaces providing a simpler service experience.

Furthermore, Thumbay Group has hired a company to deliver training for its doctors, providing them with skills to work with metaverse technologies.
