India’s leading telecom operator, Reliance Jio, tested a ‘virtual reality enabled’ multiplayer cloud gaming experience on its indigenous 5G network. The trial is a watershed moment for India’s gaming industry as it paves the way for the future of immersive gaming in the country.

Aayush Bhatnagar, Senior Vice President at Reliance Jio, shared the details of the trial on LinkedIn. He stated that the technology would provide a significant upgrade over console-based cloud gaming. Multiple users connected to the Jio’s low-latency 5G network participated in the trial with their VR headsets and other gaming accessories.

The gamers took part in real-time multiplayer virtual reality gaming experiences powered by the 5G network offering high bandwidth and low latencies. They had an enhanced real-time gaming experience with prompt haptic feedback and gesture controls. The 5G VR Cloud Gaming trial truly demonstrates the potential of the company’s 5G offering.

Jio has been testing and experimenting with several use-cases and applications for 5G using its indigenous 5G network. The company, however, has not made any official announcements for these trials, unlike its competitors, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

The news and information available about Jio’s 5G trials have come from unofficial sources or through participants and employees sharing any insights on social media. The company is keeping key details of its tests under wraps as it prepares for a commercial 5G launch. Its strategy with the 4G launch was a transformational phase for the Indian telecom sector, so it would be interesting to see how the 5G launch pans out.

Jio has also recently tested an immersive retail experience on its 5G network. Nevertheless, the commercial launch for the service would eventually happen post the spectrum auction, scheduled for June this year.
