Linux Foundation, the nonprofit that fosters innovation through open-source technologies, has established the Open Metaverse Foundation (OMF). It aims to provide a collaboration space for diverse organizations to work on creating open-source software and standards to develop a global, inclusive, vendor-neutral, and scalable Metaverse.

To help the endeavor realize its vision, several open-source communities and thought-provoking organizations have joined as founding members. Among them are the ChainHub Foundation, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Futurewei, GenXP, Guangdong Digital Industry Research Institute, the Hyperledger Foundation, the LF Edge, the LF Networking, OpenSDV, the Open Voice Network, and Veriken.

These participants work together to handle projects in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and edge computing, digital assets, transactions, identification, networking, simulations, security, and other areas.

“We’re still in the early days of the vision for an open Metaverse, and we recognize that many open source communities and foundations are working on vital pieces of this iterative puzzle,” said Royal O’Brien, Executive Director of the OMF.

The Open Metaverse Foundation is divided into Foundational Interest Groups (FIGs), allowing for a dispersed decision structure focused on a few critical issues. FIGs offer specialized tools and forums to identify fresh concepts, accomplish tasks, and integrate new participants. They comprise individuals from particular disciplines dedicated to advancing projects or scalable technologies in their area of expertise. It also ensures that the ownership of all recognizable project components (such as GitHub.org, repositories, subdirectories, APIs, tests, issues, and PRs) is addressed and managed.

The goal of OMF is to build a strong community of developers, engineers, academics, and thought leaders who will overcome the obstacles in the way of creating the open Metaverse by using open-source software and open standards that allow for portability and interoperability for a world that is open, global, scalable, and supports immersive and interactive experiences for the benefit of any person or business.
