According to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s next hardware product will be its smart glasses developed in partnership with Ray-Ban.

“The glasses have their iconic form factor, and they let you do some pretty neat things. I’m excited to get these into people’s hands and to continue to make progress on the journey towards full augmented reality glasses in the future”. – Mark Zuckerberg.

However, Facebook has dismissed rumors about the integrated display and does not name the device as an AR product.

The company’s move into hardware, specifically AR and VR with Oculus, is part of its path to becoming a ‘metaverse company’, which Zuckerberg said he believes in pivoting the company.

The metaverse is an environment that spans both digital and physical worlds where users can interact with others and a completely functioning economy in real-time. It could be through mixed reality or VR, mobile devices, game consoles, and PCs.

Apart from the Ray-Ban partnership, Facebook is also working on ‘Project Aria’ smart glasses that would add a 3D layer of relevant and important information on top of the physical world. Even though Aria was set to launch in 2021, it has been delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
