As per the latest rumors, the successor to the original PlayStation virtual reality headset, PSVR 2, could be launched during the holiday season of 2022.
The source of the report is Bloomberg, which recently concluded an investigation of the company’s shift from mobile phone screens to VR headset displays.
During the research, Bloomberg claims to have spoken to specific sources that highlighted Sony’s PSVR plans. They also found out that the PSVR successor will use Samsung OLED panels within the headset, with Sony looking for a release “in the holiday period next year.”
PSVR 2 was first announced in February. Soon after, Sony unveiled the new controllers, with the orb-like design and the vague similarities to the halo designs of Oculus Rift/Quest. The reports also speculate that the headset will feature a 4K display along with eye-tracking and haptic feedback.
The original PlayStation VR headset obtained positive reception from the consumers. Even though it was not within the league of high-end enthusiast devices like HTC’s Vive and the Oculus Rift, the device’s affordability made it an easy way to get started with VR. However, the PSVR 2, or whatever it is called, could be targeting a more advanced level of virtual reality applications and users.
