The innovative market-leading online entertainment service in China, iQIYI, has introduced a new Virtual Reality (VR) variety game show Memoon Player. An original production by the company, Memoon Player, takes viewers on the exciting journey of the show’s participants on an adventure in the VR-constructed setting of ‘Memoon Land,’ a Virtual Reality (VR) environment inspired by the actual geographic regions on the Moon.
More than 1.2 million people expressed interest in the show on the iQIYI app before it even debuted, demonstrating how enthusiastic viewers were about it before it aired. In the first episode, viewers saw show participants don motion capture gear and join the virtual world with their avatars, where they interacted, played games, and even gave performances.
The ‘Memoon Land’ app, a virtual interactive space created to provide viewers with a fully immersive experience with built-in social components, was released with the event. The app enables viewers to participate in activities, chat with other viewers, buy show-related products, and follow the show’s participants on their adventures.
A range of virtual production technologies, including virtual shooting, virtual games, XR, and holography, were utilized in Memoon Player to demonstrate a smooth transition between the virtual and real worlds. The show was created by a crew of over 60 animators, over 50 visual designers, and 110 engineers.
The team created a motion capture studio that can record the motions of up to eight avatars at once. Each avatar has more than a thousand capture points with the best optical motion capture technology available. The team also established over 20 virtual human skeleton alignment and UE real-time rendering workstations while collaborating with leading companies, including Qualcomm, Baidu, QIYU VR, and others.
“The show is, first and foremost, joyful, and it brings users much laughter, which is the most fundamental element of entertainment. With its brand-new format unseen in other variety shows, Memoon Player encourages adventure and imagination from not just the creative team but also the viewers,” said CHEN Wei, Senior Vice President of iQIYI.
