The supplier of smart glasses and augmented reality (AR) technology and products, Vuzix Corporation announced the deployment of its Vuzix smart glasses by the global mining group Rio Tinto at its Oyu Tolgoi mine located in Mongolia.
During the pandemic, technology was an essential support for seamless business operations for Rio Tinto, as stated by the company in its 2020 Annual Report. The company had increased its use of drones and mine pit cameras, as well as introduced video headsets, and smart glasses to conduct visual inspections amid a travel and physical distance restrictions.
Vuzix smart glasses are being utilized to enable technical experts located around the globe to work with and remotely support local teams at the Oyu Tolgoi underground project.
“Vuzix Smart Glasses usage continues to expand across an ever-widening array of industry verticals,” stated Paul Travers, Vuzix President and Chief Executive Officer.

Rio Tinto’s operations span over 36 countries, making it one of the largest mining groups in the world. Emerging technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality have lots of potential in the mining industry. These have been used by mining companies to create digital twins of entire mines for mapping and planning purposes along with providing remote access to their onsite teams.
