Unity, which has a platform for developing and operating RT3D (real-time 3D) content, has acquired RestAR.

RestAR is a Tel Aviv based computer vision and deep learning solution provider supporting online retailers, marketers, and fashion brands to scan and render physical consumer products in 3D for AR visualizations using their smartphones.

“With the acquisition of RestAR, Unity is giving massive power to brands, retailers, and consumers by democratizing digital marketing for almost any product. What was once out of reach for those outside of large manufacturers and consumer products companies, is now available to businesses of any size looking for a tangible, effective way to market their products. We fundamentally believe anyone should be able to leverage Unity’s products, and this acquisition is another step in that direction.” – Dave Rhodes, SVP and GM, Unity Create Solutions, Unity.

Per Unity, RestAR supports marketers and online businesses to develop high-resolution 3D product models easily by scanning the product with RestAR, which involves taking a 1-minute video to complete. Also, the process does not need any specific hardware or technical knowledge. These scans are then processed and compressed in the cloud by using artificial intelligence. RestAR is currently working with fashion brands and e-commerce platforms such as Off-White, UGG, Wix, Hoka One One, Dafiti, Heron Preston, Palm Angels, etc.

“The COVID-19 crisis accelerated the expansion of retail and other industries towards new consumer behavior and digital transformation. Alongside Unity, which has already established itself as a leader in rendering 3D content across multiple industries, RestAR, combined with Unity Forma, will be a visual content game-changer for businesses and marketers across industries.” – Bar Saraf, CEO, RestAR.

Unity did not mention the cost of this acquisition but did say that RestAR employees would join Unity from their HQ in Tel Aviv, Israel.
