Tech giant Apple has come up with a new, unique way to deploy augmented reality by adding an enormous virtual screen to a MacBook and the rest of its devices. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, the largest display in the line, is still nowhere near a usual computer monitor or a TV. Nevertheless, it is no surprise that the consumers are inclining towards more extensive displays that deliver a better viewing experience.

Historically, we have always seen displays get bigger as technology progressed. Phone screens, TV screens, even watches have gotten bigger and bigger. And there’s no reason to believe that this trend is going to reverse anytime soon.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office recently published a patent application hinting towards Apple’s plans to make the displays of its devices huge. The MacBook seems like a front-running contender for the technology that might function as a virtual display extending from the top and both sides of the device, quadrupling the screen size.

Such an application seems like the most practical use for AR than anything we’ve ever seen. The method makes an already familiar device and makes it better using AR. Apple also discussed the introduction of various eye-tracking and hand-tracking features to navigate around the augmented displays. However, simply extending the mouse and keyboard functions could work too. The technology does seem futuristic, and it could be years away from consumer applications, but it could be a game-changer for the market.
