Believe it or not, but the ninth generation console is already two months old now. The slow boot on the new console can be adjudged as another negative impact of the pandemic amongst the host of troubles it has brought upon us. But the future for products like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S still looks pretty bright.

Sony will undoubtedly bring a new set of updates for the PlayStation to support a pair of virtual reality glasses fully adapted for the PS5 that could potentially be superior to the PSVR too. Nevertheless, an October 2020 patent introduced by PlayStation hints towards an interesting technology to make virtual reality far more exciting.

As per the document filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the new technology will enable people to interact with the players without wearing any sort of VR gear. It is exciting because they will be able to impact the gameplay and influence the decisions of the player, opening up several new possibilities to design games in the future.

Viewers will be able to engage with the ‘device’ using their smartphones. Called ‘viewer devices,’ they will enable the viewers to interact with the players using their mobiles which is somewhat similar to the games of Playlink PlayStation 4 that work using the smartphone as a controller. But still, a lot is left to be discovered about the functionality.

The document precisely reads, “will increase the scene of virtual reality based on the interactions of the spectators with the interactive content of the audience.” However, a patent doesn’t mean that we’ll start seeing these features right on the next line of products but it does hint towards the plausible direction that it’s moving towards.
