An assortment of indie virtual theater-makers have brought their webXR performance parts together for a web-based VR theater experience which can be accessed from any phone, computer, tablet, or virtual reality headset.

As West End and Broadway Theatres remain closed, a virtual theater revolution has motivated artists without a stage to start making new ones in virtual space using immersive technologies.

On the one-year anniversary of the entertainment industry’s closedown, The Jigsaw Ensemble and Active Replica present ONBOARD: An Evening of Short XR Performances. The show has been rehearsed, performed, and produced in web-based VR, showing different forms and immersive, virtual theater production styles.

The audience can visit using their phones, tablets, computers, or VR headset. Once the audience logs in, they will find themselves in a virtual room where the virtual house manager will receive them, helping them “on board” a virtual cruise ship.

They can change costumes and scenery with the click of a button. The visitors travel through a “dark ride” of small performances developed by various global artists. The journey ends on a deserted island, enabling the visitors to enjoy a post-show sunset while discussing their feedback and reactions.

ON BOARD features the work of Davis Brinker, Brendan Bradley, Nick Carrillo, Ashley Clements, Meredith Casey, Zach Christensen, Clemence Debaig, Peter Glanville, Alex Coulombe, David Gochfeld, Isak Keller, Dasha Kittredge, Roman Miletitch, Kevin Laibson,  Ari Tarr, Jin-young Pellow, and Nican Robinson, giving a first of its kind “audience handoff” by some of the most important innovators in virtual and immersive storytelling globally. The evening will involve:

  • Actors performing as VR characters.
  • A play written by Open AI’s GPT-3, a chatbot.
  • Dancing live-streamed into a 3D world.
  • An interactive scavenger hunt.
  • Music generated on the spot using AI.
