Oculus offers standalone virtual reality headsets. It means that they are very straightforward and easy to use because you don’t have to connect them to another console. However, even Oculus Quest can be difficult to use,  especially if it’s your first time with a VR system. In this article, we’re going to give you 5 Oculus Quest hacks for a newbie, that will give you a headstart in your VR journey.

Create Your Avatar

One of the first things we recommend you do after getting your Oculus headset is to create an avatar. It’s basically a virtual you, that allows you to express yourself in the virtual world. It utilizes lip-syncing and eye-tracking, so your actions in real life will be translated into VR. Many apps use avatars, from Pokerstars VR to ForeVR Bowling.

To create your avatar, simply go to your profile on the home page and press the “Create Avatar” button. You will see a default avatar that can be customized in many ways, from the body, hairstyle, eyes, clothing, and even makeup. The possibilities are endless!

Passthrough

It’s very easy to get lost in the VR and spend hours playing your favorite games. However, sometimes you need to check on real life, whether it’s your pet or significant other. Instead of shutting your Oculus down and taking it off, you can use a Passthrough feature, which allows you to see a real-time view of your environment. It uses several sensors and 4 cameras to capture your surroundings and display them on your Oculus screen.

To use the Passthrough feature, go to “Settings”, then select “Guardian” and finally press the ”Double Tap for Passthrough Shortcut” button.  Now you don’t have to leave VR to know what’s happening around you in real life!

Phone Notifications in VR

Another great hack that you can use to not lose connection to the real world while using your VR is to enable phone notifications. You can quickly connect your phone to your Oculus and see your phone notifications, including calls and texts on your VR display. It’s really convenient as you no longer have to take off your Oculus to check on your phone.

To enable phone notifications, go to “Settings”, then “Devices” and finally click on “Phone notifications” to connect your phone to the Oculus headset. Keep in mind that this feature works with most Androids, but only with iPhone 7 or above.

Voice Commands

Oculus touch controllers work well and are easy to use. However, you can control your Oculus even easier using voice commands. For example, you can open apps, Oculus store, and even check the weather by just saying it out loud. To set up voice commands, go to “Settings” and select the “Voice Commands” tab. Here, you will go through a quick setup process that will activate this feature.

Change your Oculus Home Environment

You are likely to spend a good amount of time staring at your Oculus Home environment, so you better choose the theme you like the most. You can choose out of several themes, including “Quest Dome”, “Classic Home”, and “Winter Lodge”. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even download custom themes made by Oculus enthusiasts!

To change your Oculus Home environment, head to “Settings” and click on the “Virtual Environment” option, where you will see a list of available themes.
