Volkswagen has announced that it will introduce AR for head-up display in most of its electric cars. The AR technology, generally offered in premium cars, is expected to become more widespread in Volkswagen’s cars and other automakers’ in the future.

AR head-up display projects safety and practical data in front of the windscreen for the driver. The technology superimposes symbols onto the windshield, presenting them dynamically to build a new driving experience for the driver.

Essential driving information is projected onto the windshield, divided into two fields. A larger window with dynamic images is positioned in front of the driver at a virtual distance of approximately 10 meters. Information from the assistance systems, turn arrows, starting and destination points, and other navigation details are displayed in the remote window. Below this is a close-range window, which shows road signs, driving speed, and navigation representations as static displays.

Volkswagen will be the first automaker to launch this technology to its SUV and compact electric cars, mainly for its ID.3 and ID.4 electric cars, at the beginning of 2021.
