Before the premiere of George Clooney’s movie, ‘The Midnight Sky’ on Netflix, the streaming service company has launched an AR hologram application to send video messages to family and friends during the holiday season.
The application is developed by Unit9, a production studio, with the help of the webAR platform 8th Wall. It allows users to record and short videos and transform these videos into augmented reality holograms. Filters are applied to these recorded video messages to make them into 3D curved holograms, which can then be played on any flat surface, something like the ones used in the movie.
Netflix also highlights a welcome message from George Clooney, allowing viewers to place his hologram into their home and hear him encouraging them to make use of the application.
The Midnight Sky will be premiering on Netflix on December 23, 2020. The movie is a post-apocalyptic story that follows a lone scientist, George Clooney, who is isolated in the Arctic Circle. He tries to warn a crew of astronauts regarding what has happened back on earth. The Midnight Sky also stars David Oyelowo, Felicity Jones, Tiffany Boone, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir. The astronauts can view 3D holographic memories of their families and friends to help them cope with being alone in space.
