Mobile AR for iOS via ARKit was the thing of the past. Apple is now bringing augmented reality directly to iOS 15.

Craig Federighi, SVP, Software Engineering for Apple, revealed Live Text, a new camera mode that will deliver much of the same features that Google Lens offers to Android.

Live Text will allow iPhone users to point their capture photos and communicate with text. Users can now search depending on selected text or call a phone number identified within the image.

With iOS 15, Apple is also launching its version of the augmented reality walking navigation mode.

Apple Maps will provide augmented reality navigation assists in the camera view as iPhone users navigate on foot from one point to another. The augmented reality mode launch will be limited to a set of cities listed below:

  • London
  • New York
  • Philadelphia
  • Los Angeles
  • San Francisco Bay area
  • Washington, D.C.
  • San Diego

They plan to expand city coverage in the future. Also, the addition of these features as new iOS 15 updates will enable iPhone users from favoring third-party apps.
