Facebook Messenger is releasing new AR-powered experiences for video calls along with the umbrella video conferencing feature called Messenger Rooms. The company plans to bring the new “Group Effects” to its other social media platform, Instagram.
The social media giant plans to make AR effects a shared experience, which is why Group Effects will work for everyone on the video call. Users would choose from over 70 such effects on the platform that also incorporates a cool game.
Moreover, the company is broadening access to its Spark AR API to bring more creators and developers onto the platform for creating more group effects.
“Group Effects provide a more engaging and interactive way to connect with your friends. They also support the creator community and give people more ways to express themselves,” the company stated.
The platform is also introducing new “suggested word effects” that will bring animations into the chat. It will enable the users to play around with standalone messages and create word effects for them. The feature was first tested in the holiday season but is now being introduced to all iOS users and will shortly debut on Android.
The announcement for Group AR in Messenger is a part of the bigger ‘metaverse’ aspirations of the company, where it aims to create several more shared virtual experiences.
