The leading video game and software developer, Epic Games, has unveiled a new app called ‘RealityScan’ to enable iPhone users to scan objects using their camera to turn them into high-fidelity 3D models. The app has been developed using technologies from Capturing Reality, a photogrammetry specialist that Epic had acquired in 2021.

Conventionally, capturing real-world assets is a cumbersome endeavor requiring advanced equipment. However, photogrammetry is emerging as a favored technology amongst creators and hobbyists, who would immensely benefit from a platform like RealityScan.

The platform has the capabilities to reconstruct objects and scenes of any size from images or laser scans through 3D scans with unparalleled accuracy and mesh quality at speed faster than any other solutions currently on the market. It makes the complicated, technical, and labor-intensive process of capturing real-world assets for digital experiences as simple as capturing a picture on your smartphone.

The RealityScan app provides detailed instructions to ensure that the user can capture the object in good quality. For example, the app requires at least 20 shots of the object at different angles. Moreover, good lighting and a clean background will undoubtedly enhance the output.

The completed 3D objects can be exported and uploaded to Sketchfab, a leading platform to publish and discover 3D, AR, and VR content. The models can further be used for several purposes, such as converting them into augmented reality objects or incorporating them into games using the Unreal Engine.

RealityScan is the foremost step towards the company’s goal to make 3D scanning more accessible for creators. The tool can be beneficial for users of all skill sets to understand basic scanning principles to bridge the gap between beginners and professionals.
