To impress VR fans, Sony has developed a new PS5 controller, which Sony says will provide players with an enhanced sense of touch.

“When you’re traversing through a rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.” – Hideaki Nishino, SVP, Platform Planning, and Management.

Sony is facing rising competition within the virtual reality field as other technology firms accelerate their R&D. The addition of VR is also key to bringing gamers to the latest game console in its PS series.

The new VR controller features DualSense tech from Sony, which is used in the PlayStation5’s standard controller, with a haptic feedback mode letting gamers feel game actions via their hands.

An orb design lets players hold the controller easily while playing with a great degree of freedom.

Sony also revealed that the game controller would be equipped with an adaptive trigger that will create a palpable tension when it’s pressed.

The development of a new virtual reality headset for the PlayStation5 was announced last month. Sony is yet to announce a launch date but aims to offer exciting leaps in interactivity and performance.

Sony is not alone in targeting players with the virtual reality gaming console. Facebook released Oculus Quest 2 VR headset last October, while Apple is rumored that it is also working on its own.

Developers are expected to receive prototypes of Sony’s new virtual reality shortly.

The new virtual reality system will succeed the company’s PS VR, which was released in 2016.
