Elsevier, which is in research publishing and information analytics, has announced the release of SLS (Simulation Learning System) for RN with VR (SLS with VR). It is a new digital service that combines virtual reality from SimX with the healthcare content of Elsevier to provide realistic and immersive virtual reality simulations to nursing students.
Elsevier has partnered with SimX, a developer of advanced virtual reality simulation training for healthcare professionals, to give nursing schools the capability to facilitate clinical simulations as they would in a regular simulation lab. VR, along with SLS, gives a powerful solution for nursing schools encountering limitations with in-person labs and clinical rotations.
“Nursing schools are facing unprecedented challenges in delivering high-quality clinical experiences necessary for training practice-ready nurses. SLS with VR transports students to a virtual world where they are fully immersed in a dynamic clinical environment and surrounded by all the tools and resources available in a typical healthcare setting. This cutting-edge technology is an effective, affordable, and scalable solution for nursing schools in providing simulated clinical experiences that develop clinical judgment skills and improve learning outcomes.” – Brent Gordon, MD, and GM, Nursing and Health Education, Elsevier.
Nursing students can develop their skills through various evidence-based scenarios. Each of these scenarios challenges the student to make real-time decisions that have direct patient implications.
“We have seen a measurable benefit in using this VR learning solution with our students. It presents opportunities to apply their clinical judgment skills and develop vital communication skills as they work with virtual patients, their families, and other members of the healthcare team in a safe setting. Developing clinical judgment skills is an imperative outcome of nursing programs and valued skill among all health care institutions.” – Tushanna Habalar RN, MSN, School of Nursing and Health Science, Pennsylvania College of Technology.
The SimX platform in SLS with virtual reality is the most advanced virtual reality simulation platform for nursing schools. It is the only virtual reality simulation platform created to allow a multi-student experience in the same arena.
Educational institutions can select from 100+ virtual reality scenarios in different fields like Fundamentals, Health Assessment, Medical-Surgical, Pediatric, Maternity, Community, Leadership, and Psychiatric. A few examples of specific scenarios are Fall and Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment, Postoperative Respiratory Distress, Scheduled Cesarean Delivery, Colostomy and Hyperkalemia Secondary to Medication Error, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, among others. Because of the current pandemic scenario, SLS with virtual reality provides unique cases that immerse students in front-line care.
