Scott Greenberg, a real estate developer, is planning to build an Esports arena near McCormick. The area could be a pioneer and a niche business in Chicago, with solid job prospects and community events opportunities. Esports arena is expected to be a $30 million project with 108,000 square feet. Greenberg is expected to begin construction soon following the approvals.

The arena will be two stories and is believed to have a ticketed capacity of 1,040. Players can expect it to be a large virtual reality floor where players would be outfitted with a VR headset, a backpack with all the props which the game requires, like a toy gun or a wand. Another highlight of the arena will be a huge LED screen for a live stage. Those seated in this area can view professional players compete. In contrast, the second floor would have VIP areas and a lounge.

All around the arena would be areas for private events, a separate segment for Smash Interactive’s offices, and restaurant and bar facilities. The arena is also expected to have two studios for VR mountain climbing.

Greenberg and Lai predict an esports tournament being sponsored by the Illinois High School Association. Another opportunity is training programs for first responders. The Esports project has also received support from universities and schools, which considers it as a source for students in game development.

“We’re trying to create an experience for people. When they go to the venue, if they don’t know anything about the game, they will know somewhat what’s going on.” – Greenberg.
