3M and Pegatron have joined forces to develop a new virtual reality reference design headset that will come with folded optics lens. The new device will include 3M’s proprietary reflective polarizer for high resolution, high transmission, and a wide field of view that will allow for a thinner, lighter-weight design.

“We are excited to bring this advanced technology to the virtual reality market,” stated Susan Kent, Ph.D., 3M Virtual Reality Technical Leader. “Folded optics is a very efficient method to deliver high resolution, high contrast content in a beautiful and sleek design.”

“The new lens technology allows more freedom in the design of the headset,” said Paula Chen, Pegatron VX6 Project Leader. “Our new reference design, the VX6, is streamlined and slim while sitting close to the eye.”

The Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ XR2 Platform will power the VX6 reference design. It will be a truly wireless VR headset with lightning-fast download speeds made possible through WiFi 6. Head tracking and the mixed reality experience will be taken care of by four cameras on the device. The headset will have a narrow profile but will allow for adjustments for wearers with prescription glasses. The curved glasses will enable a fully immersive feel with a field of view of 95 degrees.

The VX6 headset with 3M curved lenses is expected to go into mass production in late 2021. But the flat 3M lenses will drop in early. Interested VR supply chain companies would soon be able to approach 3M to lock in orders.
