The Australian telecommunications company Telstra, Google, and Accenture have partnered to bring a 5G-powered augmented reality wayfinding experience to Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium for the footy season next year.

The experience will superimpose digital information over the real-world environment using Telstra’s latest 5G advancements, powered by Google Cloud, featuring machine learning and computer vision through the ARCore Geospatial API.

Google trekker devices have been used for the creation of the experience to develop a metric model of Marvel Stadium representing the accurate appearance and position of the physical 3D world. GPS readings and environment scans were then integrated with 360-degree images through the ARCore Geospatial API.

“This collaboration with two major technology players marks another important step in our ambition to create one of the world’s most technologically advanced stadiums here in Australia,” said Kim Krogh Andersen, Group Executive of Products and Technology at Telstra.

The amalgamation of cloud, the ARCore Geospatial API, and 5G networking will enable users to interact with virtual content, digital character displays, brand experiences, indoor wayfinding features, and more.

Visitors to the Marvel Stadium can use the ARCore GeoSpatial API to locate their seats and tune in to other immersive experiences through the app, pre-game AR shows, multi-user AR games, and check out player analytics, and performance statistics.

Google Cloud Vice President for Australia and New Zealand, Alister Dias, believes that the project is just the beginning of exploring the potential of cloud-powered 5G AR wayfinding solutions to enhance in-person experiences at physical locations.

“Google Cloud’s technology will underpin next-generation 5G capabilities, transforming the way people interact with the physical environment around them,” he stated.

Telstra has previously collaborated with the AFL to create exciting stadium experiences. It had developed a 5G upgrade to augment the connectivity for fans and applications powered by artificial intelligence, in-stadium streaming, and on-field player performance tracking.
