Third Aurora, a company focusing on machine learning and AR, is in the process of launching a new platform for AR beer labels so that beer cans provide more information. The AR platform will be a mobile app named Beerscans. Matt Hallberg, a cofounder of Third Aurora, mentioned that multiple breweries have compelling stories and are working on things behind the scenes, but consumers are not able to get to the bottom of the brewery from the can.

The Beerscans mobile app uses augmented reality, computer vision, and the phone’s camera to scan a beer can. The scan helps recognize the perimeter of the can and the label. An AR label then opens up and hovers over the beer can. The AR label shares the story behind the brewery, tasting notes of the beer, along with other information which the beer company wants to share.

Earlier, Third Aurora had launched Winerytale, a mobile app with the same concept as Beerscans, but for wine bottles. Another company, Living Labels, has partnered with some wineries to render augmented reality labels, including some of the popular wineries like 19 Crimes. Third Aurora intends to launch Beerscans in the next three months and will be made available for free on both Android and iOS. Third Aurora is currently signing up breweries and plans to have more than 100 breweries signed up before the launch.
