The award-winning digital therapeutics company, Smileyscope, has been awarded a patent for its innovative approach to synchronizing procedures using VR and AR stimuli. The startup amalgamates evidence-based medicine with state-of-the-art technology to facilitate digital treatments for patients combating pain, anxiety, and mental health.

Smileyscope’s Co-founder, Paul Leong MD, MPH, Ph.D., said, “Our award-winning VR system is designed for healthcare settings. We developed and patented a powerful approach to changing the brain’s perception of real-world stimuli, ‘re-framing’ what the user experiences in the virtual world.”

The company has demonstrated the effectiveness of its tech with its pioneering product for needle procedures. The VR experience takes the patients through an undersea adventure wherein they experience waves washing over their arm as an antiseptic is applied with fish nibbling at the injective site when the needle is inserted.

Smileyscope has achieved 60% reductions in pain and 40% reductions in anxiety during its two large pediatric randomized controlled trials by replacing negative real-world with positive virtual stimuli. Moreover, the company’s exceptional user interface has received patent protection. Patients can launch in the VR experience in under 10 seconds at the push of a single button.

Dr. Leong added, “This means we can start treatment five times faster than other VR headsets.”

The company aims to bring its patented technologies to several healthcare applications and replace methods, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, or complete sedation.
