With the acquisition of AR glasses firm North last year, tech giant Google is rapidly moving forward with upscaling its presence in the augmented reality space. The company is reportedly working on “a new generation of smart glasses.”
The Mountain View, California-based tech behemoth, took over the Canadian company in the summer of last year to get a headstart in the smart glass market after its Google Glass project did not deliver an expected outcome.
North had been marketing the Focals smart glasses before the acquisition. However, the company had discontinued sales of the first-generation variant of the product, likely due to poor market response. It began working on the second-generation Focals post the acquisition, but the project has since been discontinued.
However, Google is one of the many tech giants looking to make strides within the augmented reality wearables market. Meta recently teamed up with Ray-Ban to launch Ray-Ban Stories, a line of smart spectacles to compete with Snap’s Spectacles.
Even though there hasn’t been much news regarding a new AR product from Google’s end, we can expect something substantial to pop up soon as it has been actively hiring for its augmented reality team. The team will reportedly work on a new augmented reality operating system that could further facilitate the company’s entry into the metaverse.
