With rising interest in augmented reality and people becoming more usual to connect via video calls and virtual tools, Facebook has announced the next stage of its augmented reality development options. It includes a Multipeer API for the digital effect that will allow developers to create multi-participant augmented reality experiences.

“While video calling has a long history, it has mostly consisted of a video channel coupled with an audio channel. Now, with the introduction of our Multipeer API, we’re introducing a data channel that will allow AR effects to communicate with each other seamlessly across users and devices. We think this is a fundamental shift, one that will help move AR from a single user, single-screen experience to a multi-user, multi-screen experience – and ultimately, unlock incredible new use cases for group AR effects.” – Facebook.

The development can promote a variety of new opportunities for companies in developing participatory AR experiences, which could improve customer connection and raise engagement with digital offerings.

The method can also provide new informative experiences, with in-built walkthroughs to assist customers on processes or enhanced Q&A sessions.

Facebook, in addition to this, is also building full-body tracking for augmented reality that is similar to Snapchat’s full-body scan.

The new Multipeer API from Facebook is now in the beta testing stage, with all developers able to join in the initial testing and development. Applicants should be familiar with Spark AR Studio and should have a satisfactory working knowledge of JavaScript.
