New virtual reality content for the series Space Explorers: The ISS Experience has been announced by LG Uplus Corp. In September 2020, the company established the Global XR Content Telco Alliance; the first-ever international 5G extended reality partnership.
The XR alliance is the world’s largest 5G content alliance and the first of its kind. The alliance aims to produce unique virtual and augmented reality content by integrating the members’ capabilities and advanced tech.
The XR alliance comprises several global telecom operators, including Bell Canada, Qualcomm, Japan’s KDDI Corporation, and China’s China Telecommunications Corporation. Many VR content developers also feature in the alliance, such as Canada’s Felix & Paul Studios and France’s Atlas V. Canada’s Orange, Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom. The US’s Verizon has also joined the alliance this year.
The Global XR Content Telco Alliance aims to deliver immersive and highly engaging content to viewers in 5G-connected areas. For example, LG Uplus unveiled a VR series about the International Space Station (ISS) a month after forming the XR alliance.
“We will continue to increase the interests of customers by promoting the quantitative and qualitative growth of XR content,” said Choi Yoon-Ho, VP of LG Uplus’s XR Service Unit. Choi also added that LG Uplus would cooperate with several companies and upscale the XR ecosystem to achieve this goal.
With the upcoming VR content and an operator network spanning over seven regions, the company has established itself as the frontrunner in the fast-growing metaverse era. LG Uplus plans to advance the XR industry by producing VR and AR content through the metaverse platform. The Global XR Content Telco Alliance would also nurture the metaverse era by blending new technologies and expanding their scope.
