The Chinese mobile voice and multimedia service provider, China Mobile, is taking the progress made with digital platforms at the Tokyo Olympics a step ahead by introducing virtual reality at the Beijing Winter Games in Hong Kong.

The local arm of the Chinese company has secured virtual reality broadcast rights for the Winter Olympics to offer viewers a unique immersive perspective of the global event.

As a part of the agreement, China Mobile will offer on-demand competition highlights in a VR 360 panorama format delivering a distinctive experience of key Olympic moments throughout the duration of the Games from February 4 to 28.

Like the Games in Tokyo, digital platforms will undoubtedly be vital for enabling people to experience the event, and virtual reality takes it a step further. Moreover, a recent PwC study found that VR content was among the fastest-growing media segment globally.

China Mobile stated that access to the Olympic VR will be free, and viewers can control the dynamic angles and positions using the UTV app on their smartphones.

The app also features a ‘Winter Olympics Zone,’ listing several programs from competition sessions, real-time medal table, Olympics discussions to features on Olympians.

In addition to the VR content, viewers can watch the Games in 8K broadcast ultra high definition formats from the comfort of their homes.
