Extended reality music platform Volta has been awarded a £400,000 grant from Innovate UK, a Government-backed agency offering money and support to companies developing new products and services.

Volta is a self-serve XR creation platform that allows artists and creators to design and broadcast experiential content beyond the 2D realm and reach their audiences within the metaverse. It is a Techstars portfolio company at the forefront of music technology development. The company has previously partnered with Warner, Beatport, Boiler Room, Mixcloud, and more to bring the next generation of music experiences to the global audience.

The firm was recently a part of the Glastonbury Festival, where it collaborated with artists Bonobo, Jamie Jones, TSHA, Grove, and Fumez The Engineer. The shows featured exciting, automated visual effects, which were synced with their music in real-time.

The company’s XR technology encompasses several virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality components to create a one-of-a-kind experience for concert goers.

Volta stated that the grant would help the company invest in researching and building audience interaction features to bring the global and local audiences together during live events. The platform aims to enable online and physical audiences to influence their experience during a live event in real-time and help create a novel revenue stream for artists.

The company plans to add gaming mechanics, in-app purchases, and more remote user interaction features on the platform to enhance the user experience during live events. Volta also plans on hiring behavioral scientists to understand the motivation and mindset of concert-goers live and live-streamed, along with the psychological implications of making experiences interactive.

“This money not only gives us Government funding but the opportunity to methodically learn how to translate the best parts of live events into hybridized ones,” said Volta CEO Alex Kane.
