The smart contact lens innovator, Mojo Vision, has raised $45 million to adapt its augmented reality contact lenses for sports and fitness applications.

The Saratoga, California-based company describes itself as the Invisible Computing Company. Along with the funding announcement, it also disclosed details about various strategic partnerships with sports and fitness brands to develop next-generation user experiences using augmented reality, wearable technology, and personal performance data.

The companies will collaborate to examine unique ways to improve data accessibility and performance enhancement during sporting activities using Mojo’s smart contact lens technology.

Mojo Vision looks to capitalize on the rapidly-growing wearables market by improving access to performance data and real-time stats for data-conscious athletes like runners, cyclists, gym users, golfers, and more. The intuitive, hands-free, eye-controlled user interface on the Mojo Lens is an exciting innovation in that direction. The company has inked initial partnerships with Adidas Running, Trailforks, Wearable X, Slopes, and 18Birdies.

The partnerships and the market expertise of its partners will aid Mojo Vision in exploring additional smart contact lens interfaces. The company can actively work towards creating experiences to understand and improve data delivery for athletes of varying skill levels and abilities.

“We are making important progress in developing our smart contact lens technology, and we continue to research and identify new market potential for this groundbreaking platform,” said Steve Sinclair, Senior Vice President of Product and Marketing for Mojo Vision. “Our partnerships with these leading brands will give us valuable insights into user behavior in the sports and fitness market. The goal is for these collaborations to deliver athletes an entirely new form factor with performance data that is more accessible and useful [at] the moment.”
