The world’s first platform for virtual reality children’s books and content, Peeka, is partnering with HarperCollins Children’s Books to bring storybooks to life using VR.
The Seattle-based company primarily focuses on picture book-related and other educational, kid-friendly content delivered as fully immersive experiences accessible on mobile phones. Peeka aims to motivate children by inculcating a passion for learning and reading while discussing crucial topics, such as diversity, empathy, race, mindfulness, gender, and more.
The company’s studio has already begun working on HarperCollins Children’s Books I Want to Be a Doctor by Laura Driscoll, illustrated by Catalina Echeverri. The next in line is Zuri Ray Tries Ballet by Tami Charles, illustrated by Sharon Sordo, and the Christmas classic Peppermint Post by Bruce Hale, illustrated by Stephanie Laberis. These immersive experiences are expected to debut on the Peeka app later this year.
A recent study conducted by Project Tomorrow highlighted that 75 percent of parents and 71 percent of teachers believe that optimum utilization of technology is vital for students’ future success. Peeka presents a unique alternative in the screen-dominated world to enable kids to get back to reading with content that is delightful for the entire family to engage together.
Moreover, the company’s offering is also a brilliant opportunity for publishers and authors to gain more from their IP. This licensing deal between the two entities highlights the potential of VR tech to further the development of book content.
“I’m excited and honored to team up with HarperCollins in the wonderful world of immersive kids’ entertainment. This is a milestone for Peeka and for the VR industry,” said Michael Wong, the Chief Executive for Peeka.
