The leading provider of VR-powered surgical training solutions, PrecisionOS, has partnered with the medical technology company, Siemens Healthineers, to facilitate immersive VR training.

The training module will enable surgeons and technicians to get hands-on experience in using Siemens Healthineers’ mobile 3D C-arm Cios Spin for intraoperative quality control and surgical workflow guidance. The VR training can facilitate multi-user, peer-to-peer training sessions to enable surgeons to share the surgical procedure know-how with a virtual patient. It would significantly enhance surgeon-technician collaboration.

“Providing better training for surgeons and technicians will promote better teamwork and experience for everyone in the OR [operating room],” said Danny Goel, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and CEO at PrecisionOS.

The company’s claims regarding the importance of collaboration between the C-arm technician and the surgeon during surgery gained more relevance through a case study. A fourth-year resident, trained using PrecisionOS’ training module, successfully performed surgery with 10x less radiation as opposed to an alternative index procedure.

The virtual reality setup enables surgeons and technicians to practice and experience life-like situations while collaborating in a realistic virtual environment. This has several benefits, such as enhancing the quality of the procedure, helping the users develop imaging-related skills, providing them with more certainty during the procedure, and facilitating better patient care and improved OR safety.

“PrecisionOS’ VR software allows for surgeons to practice and behave authentically as well as collaboratively in a hyper-realistic environment,” said Janine Weidling, Global Head of Education Services Advanced Therapies at Siemens Healthineers.

PrecisionOS further stated its plans to augment training for other aspects of the operating room. The company had recently taken the jump from orthopedics to general surgery. The Siemens Healthineers partnership will help expand the PrecisionOS network of medical device partners, comprising several of the top ten medical device companies.
