Vuzix Corporation has made the announcement that the Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses were used to aid the first augmented reality knee replacement surgery conducted in the U.S. An orthopedic surgeon carried out the operation in NY City at the HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery), ranked number one in orthopedics for 11 consecutive years in the US.

NextAR TKA, the AR knee replacement platform from Medacta, received clearance from the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) in July 2020. It uses a CT scan of the patient’s knee to plan the surgery and use AR glasses during surgery. Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses provide the surgeon to visualize kee structures and track progress in real-time directly on the operated area, without the need to check it on a computer or laptop.

“Vuzix Smart Glasses continue to be leveraged across healthcare to aid in the delivery of the next generation of clinical care such as surgeries that leverage augmented reality smart glasses, artificial intelligence and machine learning. It’s a significant milestone for the augmented reality smart glasses industry and Vuzix is thrilled to be part of another industry first in healthcare.” – Paul Travers, CEO and President, Vuzix.
