The Taiwan-based smartphone maker, HTC, is looking for a resurgence in the market with an AR/VR-centric device focused on capitalizing opportunities within the metaverse.
The company had been a leading smartphone brand back in the 2010s but has gone through an imminent downfall in recent years. Nevertheless, the company has announced that its upcoming premium phone will be unlike any other device currently on the market.
The company had also unveiled the virtual world Viverse at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022. Charles Huang, GM, HTC Vive Asia-Pacific, explained of the company’s efforts towards building a smartphone around immersive tech.
The news comes as a surprise as the company had sold its mobile division to Google for $1.1 billion in early 2018 who used it for manufacturing the Pixel phones.
The announcement does create some excitement about the applications of the technology built within the device. However, very little information about the smartphone has been disclosed, so its capabilities for delivering a thoroughly immersive experience are unknown.
