Education authorities in Daegu, a city 240 kilometers southeast of Seoul, are introducing metaverse-based classes for elementary, middle, high, and special-education schools. Students from ten local schools will get access to a simulated digital world platform to perform various functions as avatars during the class. New curriculums based on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will be developed to take the initiative further.

The metaverse can be described as a digital world that bridges the gap between physical reality and virtual spaces. Users can use avatars to participate in hands-on experiences with the metaverse. The upcoming fast 5G networks will rapidly enhance metaverse applications in the education sector.

About 2,100 students are already participating in metaverse-based science classes facilitated by education authorities in Seoul. The students attend the classes in a virtual exhibition hall called “Gather Town” through their avatars.

South Korea’s educational ministry had launched virtual classes in April 2020 owing to the restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the rise in the number of cases, several elementary and middle schools switched from offline class curriculums to online classes. Several platforms, including a multi-language learning service for children, have been developed for this purpose.
