Pixotope Tracking – Fly Edition (Pixotope Fly), a new camera tracking software solution that significantly streamlines the creation and tracking of augmented reality elements with drones and cable cameras, has been released by Pixotope, the industry-leading software platform for end-to-end real-time virtual production solutions.

Productions and live events can now engage audiences with dynamic real-time aerial images thanks to the innovative markerless technology, which removes the complex setup and creative restrictions imposed by tracking markers.

“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with Pixotope Fly,” said David Dowling, Chief Revenue Officer at Pixotope.

It eliminates the resource-intensive configuration needed for conventional drone tracking technology, requires no specialized sensor cameras, markers, or proprietary hardware to function, and is surprisingly easy to use. To get started, all you need is a drone or cable camera.

The Pixotope creative partner, Silver Spoon Animation, has already put Pixotope Fly to the test on a significant national live broadcast coverage of American stock car racing. In one case, the makers showed spectators an animated graphic of the winner next to their car, accompanied by dazzling real-time particle effects, to celebrate the victory. At the same time, the Pixotope Fly-calibrated drone pulled away for a wide shot. Silver Spoon also performed a gravity-defying RV stunt jump above the track for an AR advertisement.

“Our client wanted something that viewers had never seen before, but to deliver a first-of-its-kind AR graphics package, we needed a first-of-its-kind technology solution,” said Dan Pack, Managing Director at Silver Spoon Animation.

Marker-based tracking systems demand a significant increase in resources and environment setup for filming. Because Pixotope Fly uses software-based markerless TTL technology, which requires less time and resources to set up, this step is eliminated.

Pixotope Fly enables producers to freely move across the sky without losing sight of markers, typical in live environments due to varying lighting, weather, and other unanticipated interferences. In addition, the software is constantly updating its point of reference, protecting users from the whims of the markers in a challenging setting.
