Somerville-based tech startup, Rendever, has developed innovative virtual reality experiences to help tackle the feelings of depression and social isolation amongst the aging population. The users can put on a Virtual Reality headset that takes them to locations and scenes from their past, help them reconnect with family members, check off bucket list items, such as scaling the peak of Mt. Everest, and more.

Rendever has offered this service to more than 400 senior living facilities in the five years they have been in operation. They continue to add new immersive experiences and content to their library.

“By triggering something and getting them to share and connect with those around them, those shared positive experiences really build the community, connect people, make them feel not as alone,” said Stephanie Randall, the Director of Programs for Rendever

According to NIA research, 50% of seniors say they have felt lonely and isolated while living in a community. These emotions can physically manifest as an increased risk of stroke, heart attacks, and cognitive decline.

The study also demonstrated that Rendever boosts resident happiness by 40% by providing enjoyable, communal experiences that encourage social and mental stimulation. The physical and mental health of the aging population can suffer significantly from mobility restrictions. Rendever aims to overcome these restrictions and give users access to experiences they might never have imagined.

For anyone, regardless of age, Rendever has made the process simple enough. They have removed all technological barriers from the headset user, making it simple enough to put it on and start the experience.

One tablet that staff members typically use controls all headsets. Staff members also have access to Rendever’s 24/7 engagement team, who can support and help in any technical difficulties. Rendever also keeps adding new functions, like RendeverLive and RendeverFit.

While the conversation about mental health in today’s society is gradually becoming more inclusive and thorough, seniors are frequently excluded even though they may be the most at-risk group.
