The US-based mobility service provider and a part of the Hyundai Motor Group, Supernal, and Microsoft have established a partnership to promote autonomy, digital operations, and cloud integration technologies for the aviation sector by operating Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) on the Microsoft cloud platform.

Supernal can utilize the adaptability and cloud computing capacity required to execute safe simulations at scale and quicken its path to commercialization with Microsoft Azure. The company’s extensive industry knowledge and experience will help Microsoft improve its customer-driven product innovation, particularly by making it easier for AAM enterprises to test and train simulations.

“In ushering in a new frontier of transportation with Advanced Air Mobility, Supernal has an obligation to ensure safe and secure deployment of eVTOL vehicles,” said Dr. Jaiwon Shin, President of Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of Supernal.

In the first stage of the partnership, Microsoft will give Supernal early access to Project AirSim, an AI-first simulation platform for developing, testing, training, and validating autonomous aircraft transportation. Project AirSim uses Azure to produce large amounts of environmental and sensory data used to train machine-learning models that simulate all flight phases and changing weather situations.

Project AirSim offers synthetic data production from a partner ecosystem, planet-scale 3D environments representing urban and rural landscapes, and libraries of pretrained AI models to speed up aerial autonomy.

Additionally, Supernal plans to develop augmented reality (AR) solutions for vehicle and factory operations using the Microsoft HoloLens 2 mixed-reality headset. By giving personnel visual feedback while doing regular tasks and virtually bringing engineering help on-site, augmented reality resources could improve efficiency in the future manufacture and maintenance of AAM.

To provide entire smart city infrastructure to markets and create a seamless customer journey, Microsoft is a crucial ecosystem partner for Supernal.

“Air transport is a key pillar in the democratization of mobility, connecting more people, goods, and places through safe flight experiences,” said Ulrich Homann, Corporate Vice President for Cloud + AI at Microsoft.
