The Volvo Cars Tech Fund, the automaker’s venture arm, has invested in the optics and imaging startup Spectralics. The company is working on technology to be integrated into a vehicle’s windshield or windows to display images for drivers and passengers.
The company will use the $2 million investment to accelerate the development of its optical film aimed at making cars safer and promising a better driving experience. The startup’s collaboration with Volvo could be highly beneficial as its technology could directly end up within the company’s cars.
Spectralics is developing a see-through optical overlay, also called ‘multi-layered thin combiner,” that can provide a wider field of view and a better sense of distance to drivers using augmented reality, making it safer to drive. Moreover, the tech could also be used for smart glasses, optical systems, and other head-up displays.
“Spectralics is a good portfolio fit for us, and we believe that their technology has the potential to set a standard for the next generation of displays and cameras,” said Volvo Cars Tech Fund’s Head Lee Ma.
