The University of Portsmouth unveiled the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR), the UK’s first purpose-built facility to bring a suite of new-age XR technologies under one roof and foster innovation within the virtual reality, augmented reality, and extended reality space.

CCIXR will facilitate XR training, research, and development to address the critical skills shortage in the industry. It will aid the creation of high-value jobs for the industry regionally, nationally, and globally.

The Centre will collaborate with businesses and organizations to enhance the understanding of XR and make it more accessible through a wide range of applications, such as simulators, training tools, immersive visitor attractions, metaverse-based uses, and more.

CCIXR experts have already worked with several key organizations, including the Royal Navy and Royal Shakespeare Company, and have assisted over 100 other entities with knowledge and training in XR technologies through the Enabling XR Enterprise (eXRe) project, funded by the Government’s GBP 220 million UK Community Renewal Fund.

The University has partnered with key global companies and brands to bring the very latest XR technology to the CCIXR, including a Motion Capture (MOCAP) Studio, a smart stage, and full virtual production and mixed reality studio, a photogrammetry and scanning studio, a volumetric video studio, music technology and sound studios (including Dolby Atmos), projection mapping capabilities, a spatial computing lab, game development facilities, digital coding development spaces, and meeting and conferencing facilities.

“The University of Portsmouth is proud to have developed the CCIXR in collaboration with the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership. This is a world-leading facility that places us at the forefront of innovation in virtual and extended reality, which will be at the heart of the next generation of digital technologies that will transform future work and leisure activities,” said Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth.
